Juditha Triumphans was a commission to celebrate the victory of the Venetians over the Turks in 1716, and represents the highest point of Vivaldi’s vocal output. In the same way that Verdi considered his Requiem to be his best opera, Vivaldi’s oratorio is an almost political work, a cruel story of violent antagonism – death depicted by music of great beauty that contrasts with the brutality of the action.
